Hike My Trail Privacy Policy
Privacy Policy
Last updated: July 2026
Hike My Trail (“the App”) is designed with privacy as a core principle. The App does not require you to create an account, does not operate its own cloud backend, and does not automatically upload your personal information to servers operated by the developer.
Most information created while using the App remains stored only on your device unless you explicitly choose to share or export it.
1. Information stored on your device
The App stores information locally on your device to provide its functionality.
Depending on how you use the App, this may include:
Planned routes
Recorded hikes
Hiking statistics
Private camping locations
Offline map download records
Map settings and preferences
Navigation settings
Application settings
Locally selected photographs associated with hikes
Usage counters used to respect third-party API limits
User-supplied API keys
This information is stored only on your device using local SQLite storage and your device’s secure credential storage where appropriate.
The developer does not have access to this information.
2. No user accounts
Hike My Trail does not require you to create an account.
The developer does not collect or require:
Names
Email addresses
Passwords
Telephone numbers
Payment details
User profiles
There is no registration process.
3. No developer cloud storage
The App does not operate a developer-owned cloud service.
Your routes, hikes, camping locations, settings and photographs are not automatically uploaded or synchronised with the developer.
If you uninstall the App, your locally stored information may be permanently deleted by your operating system unless you have exported or backed it up separately.
4. Location information
The App uses your device location to provide features such as:
Showing your current position
Route planning
Navigation
Hike recording
Weather forecasts along your route
Nearby place searches
Emergency tools
Location information is processed on your device wherever possible.
Certain optional online features require your location or route coordinates to be transmitted directly to third-party service providers in order to function.
Examples include:
Requesting walking directions
Requesting weather forecasts
Searching for nearby places
Downloading online map tiles
The developer does not receive copies of your location.
5. User-supplied API keys
The App allows you to enter your own API keys for supported online services.
These keys are stored securely using your device’s secure credential storage.
They are used only when communicating directly with the corresponding service provider.
The developer does not receive, collect or store your API keys.
6. Third-party services
Some optional features communicate directly with third-party service providers. Only the information necessary to fulfil your request is transmitted.
Examples include:
Route coordinates
Destination coordinates
Weather request locations
Map tile requests
Place search queries
Your user-supplied API key (where applicable)
The App currently supports services including:
OpenRouteService (route calculation)
Met Office Weather DataHub (weather forecasts)
MapLibre-compatible map providers
OpenStreetMap, OpenFreeMap and OpenMapTiles infrastructure
Mapzen terrain data
Use of these services is governed by their own privacy policies and terms.
The developer is not responsible for the privacy practices, availability or content of third-party services. Users should review the privacy policies of those providers before using online features.
7. Offline maps
Offline maps are downloaded directly from publicly available map providers.
Downloaded map data remains stored on your device.
The developer does not receive information about which map regions you download.
8. GPX export and sharing
The App allows you to export routes and recorded hikes as GPX files.
Files are only shared when you explicitly choose to export or share them.
The App does not automatically transmit GPX files anywhere.
Once you choose a sharing destination, that destination’s privacy policy applies.
9. Emergency features
Hike My Trail includes optional emergency assistance features such as coordinate sharing, emergency telephone shortcuts, Morse signalling, flashlight signalling, emergency routing and battery-saving modes.
These features are intended to assist users but must not be relied upon as the sole means of obtaining assistance in an emergency.
Their operation depends on device hardware, operating system behaviour, permissions, battery level, network availability, GPS reception and third-party services where applicable. The developer cannot guarantee that these features will operate correctly or be available in every situation.
10. Photos
You may choose to associate photographs with recorded hikes.
These photographs remain on your device.
The App stores references to the selected images locally.
The App does not upload your photographs.
11. Permissions
Depending on which features you use, the App may request permission to access:
Precise location
Approximate location
Background location (during active hikes where supported)
Photos/Media Library
Flashlight/Torch
Network access
Permissions are requested only when required for the corresponding feature.
You can revoke permissions at any time through your device settings.
12. Analytics
Hike My Trail does not use analytics services to track your activity.
The App does not include advertising identifiers.
The App does not profile users.
13. Advertising
Hike My Trail does not display third-party advertising.
14. Children’s privacy
The App is not specifically directed towards children under the age required by applicable law.
The developer does not knowingly collect personal information from children.
15. Data retention
Because your information is stored locally, you control how long it is kept.
You may delete:
Routes
Hikes
Camping spots
Downloaded maps
API keys
All locally stored application data
at any time using the App’s controls or by uninstalling the App.
The App includes an option to erase all locally stored data.
16. Data security
The App uses platform-provided security features where available.
Sensitive information such as user-supplied API keys is stored using your operating system’s secure credential storage.
While reasonable measures are taken to protect locally stored information, no method of electronic storage or transmission can be guaranteed to be completely secure.
17. International data transfers
When you use online services such as weather forecasts, routing or map downloads, your requests are sent directly to the relevant service provider.
Any international transfer of information is governed by the privacy policy of that provider.
The developer does not operate intermediary servers for these requests.
18. Your rights
Depending on your location, applicable privacy laws may give you rights regarding your personal information.
Because your information is generally stored only on your own device, you can usually exercise these rights directly by deleting or exporting your data.
If you have privacy-related questions, you may contact the developer using the contact details below.
19. Changes to this Privacy Policy
This Privacy Policy may be updated from time to time.
Any updates will be published with a revised “Last updated” date.
Continued use of the App after an update constitutes acceptance of the revised Privacy Policy.
